Artificial intelligence is transforming how governments, policy organizations, and their partners deliver services, shape regulations, and build public trust. Understanding AI capabilities and limitations is essential for anyone involved in making informed decisions that serve the public interest. This course will equip you with the vocabulary, frameworks, and judgment to ask the right questions, set appropriate boundaries, and guide AI initiatives in ways that support public accountability.

Through applied scenarios, you will distinguish between task automation and AI-enabled decision making to determine where human judgment must remain central. Working with a selected workplace problem throughout the course, you'll practice identifying AI opportunities, mapping decision boundaries, and evaluating risks and accountability structures. By the end of this course, you'll be prepared to lead AI conversations, make informed decisions about AI adoption, and establish governance frameworks that maintain accountability while advancing your organization's mission.

Effective AI governance begins with trustworthy data. For leaders overseeing AI initiatives, it's not a question of whether AI is the right solution but whether your organization's data can responsibly support it. Poor data quality doesn't just create technical problems; it can escalate into governance risks and policy crises when AI systems make decisions that affect people and communities.

This course equips you with frameworks to assess data readiness, diagnose performance issues, and evaluate advanced solutions — including synthetic data and AI-driven quality improvements — through a governance lens. You will distinguish data quality issues from AI performance problems, identify drift risks, and design human oversight mechanisms that protect accountability and public value.

Through applied scenarios and workplace projects, you will create readiness assessments, monitoring protocols, and evaluation strategies that help prevent risks before they impact people. By the end, you'll be prepared to lead data governance decisions that keep an organization using AI accountable to the communities it serves.

Responsible AI governance demands more than technical expertise; it requires ethical leadership that protects people, builds public trust, and delivers clear value to communities. For leaders overseeing AI initiatives, the challenge is ensuring systems operate fairly, transparently, and accountably, because bias, privacy gaps, and lack of explainability can quickly become public trust crises. This course will equip you to lead ethical AI assessments, apply structured risk management approaches, and build governance systems that maintain public confidence.

In this course, you will develop practical skills for conducting ethical risk assessments and making responsible AI governance decisions. You'll examine how to apply the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) AI Risk Management Framework to identify and mitigate risks while exploring how AI can serve as both a bias detector and bias prevention tool. Through hands-on activities and projects, you'll navigate ethical dilemmas involving bias, fairness, and accountability in AI systems.

You will also explore how ethical leadership principles translate into operational controls and conduct workplace assessments that surface hidden bias before it affects communities. Working with an AI initiative, you'll use professional ethics assessment tools and governance structures that demonstrate public accountability. By the end of this course, you'll be prepared to lead ethical AI initiatives, apply structured risk management frameworks, and develop governance recommendations that protect people while delivering public value.

AI governance is rapidly moving from voluntary principles to enforceable regulations. For those overseeing AI initiatives, understanding the policy landscape isn't enough; you must be able to evaluate your organization's compliance, develop enforceable governance frameworks, and create vendor management requirements that demonstrate responsible AI use.

In this course, you will develop practical skills for navigating the complex world of AI regulation and policy implementation. You'll practice evaluating your organization's current policies against emerging regulatory standards, from EU AI Act requirements to U.S. Executive Orders and OMB guidance. Through hands-on analysis, you'll explore how to identify compliance gaps and regulatory exposure before they become costly problems.

You will also examine how to translate organizational values into enforceable policies with clear accountability measures, human oversight requirements, and documentation standards. Finally, you'll tackle the critical challenge of implementation by evaluating procurement requirements, contract frameworks, and vendor accountability measures that put your governance policies in practice. By the end of this course, you'll be prepared to lead AI policy compliance efforts, develop governance frameworks that can withstand regulatory scrutiny, and create vendor management approaches that ensure responsible AI implementation.

Successful AI capabilities start with strategy, not technology. That means putting mission, workforce, and public trust at the center of every decision. For professionals working within government, the real challenge is figuring out how to implement AI in ways that deliver public value and build lasting organizational capacity.

In this course, you will develop practical skills for designing AI implementations that work. You'll assess your organization's strategic readiness and workforce capabilities, moving beyond assumptions to understand actual adoption challenges and change management needs. Through hands-on assessment and strategy development, you'll practice creating implementation plans that address both mission alignment and human factors.

You will also explore the critical skill of measuring success beyond operational efficiency, exploring KPI frameworks that capture public value, trust, equity, and institutional learning. Finally, you'll develop storytelling capabilities to communicate AI value to diverse stakeholders — from skeptical employees to oversight bodies — building the narrative foundation that drives adoption and maintains public accountability. By the end of this course, you'll be prepared to lead AI implementations that deliver measurable public value, build workforce capabilities, and maintain the trust and transparency essential for government innovation.

Deploying AI systems is only the beginning. Sustaining responsible AI in government requires robust oversight, proactive monitoring, and systems that learn and adapt over time. The critical challenge goes beyond making AI work to ensuring it continues working ethically, effectively, and accountably throughout its operational life cycle while maintaining public trust and policy compliance evaluation.

In this course, you will develop practical skills for governing AI after it goes live. You'll identify warning signals of system drift, performance degradation, and unintended consequences, building monitoring capabilities that catch problems before they impact citizens. Through realistic failure scenarios and public challenge simulations, you'll practice making critical decisions about when to pause, retrain, or retire AI systems under pressure.

You'll also examine the organizational systems that sustain accountability, developing escalation protocols, assigning oversight responsibilities, and applying institutional learning loops that turn experience into improved governance. Beyond internal processes, you'll build skills for explaining AI decisions to non-technical stakeholders and responding to external scrutiny. Finally, you'll integrate risk assessment, accountability systems, and leadership structures into comprehensive governance approaches that evolve with your AI applications.

By the end of this course, you will be prepared to lead continuous AI accountability efforts that maintain system performance, public trust, and regulatory considerations while enabling your organization to learn and improve its AI governance capabilities over time.
