Every five years the United States Department of Agriculture reauthorizes the Farm Bill. If you’re not a farmer, you might not think that this massive piece of legislation affects you. In reality, anyone who eats or breathes should care about the Farm Bill. It has an enormous impact on what is grown within our local, regional, and national food systems as well as the natural resources – our soil, air and water – on which food and farming depend.
The Farm Bill also plays a vital role in the lives of marginalized Americans, as it dictates the future direction of national nutrition and hunger programs.
With its importance on the environment, local economies, and public health, the Farm Bill is relevant to everyone, even if you’ve never stepped foot on a farm.
